Considering the APMD for Your Child?

Choosing the right pathway into medicine is one of the biggest decisions a family makes together. You’re likely asking practical questions: Is this school respected? Will my child be supported? Will this pathway prepare them for a career as a physician? Where will they be licensed to practice medicine?

What Makes This Pathway Different

For families in the US, the more familiar route carries a built-in uncertainty: apply to college, perform well for four years, then apply to medical school with no guarantee of acceptance. The APMD removes that second round of uncertainty, your child receives conditional acceptance to Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM)’s MD Program at the same time as their undergraduate acceptance, before they’ve even moved into their freshman dorm.

For families outside the US, the more familiar route is often an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or similar program abroad, respected in its own right, but not built around US licensure, which can mean additional exams, retraining, or cost later if your child wants to practice in the US. The APMD is structured around US licensure from day one: a US undergraduate bachelor’s degree, an MD from WAUSM, and clinical training at US partner hospitals.

Either way, from the moment your child is accepted, your family knows the full six-year path: where they’ll study, when they’ll transition to medical coursework, and when they’ll return to the US for clinical training. It’s one connected journey, not two separate, high-stakes applications.

How Your Child Will Be Supported

WAUSM maintains a 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio, built around personalized learning, with faculty who keep an open-door culture.

Career advising begins on day one of the MD Program, not in the final year. Students receive help exploring specialties, building their profile, and positioning themselves for residency well before their fourth year, the same structured guidance that has helped WAUSM’s leadership and faculty collectively train more than 25,000 physicians into residency across the US and Canada over the course of their careers.

“Professors have an open-door policy and are open to hearing our ideas. I can take any idea I have right to our campus dean.”

Our Partnerships Reflect Real Confidence

WAUSM has partnered with established US universities, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Batten University, Canisius University, Drake University, Goucher College, Manhattanville University, and the University of New Hampshire, to build the Accelerated Pathway to MD.

Universities with decades of academic history do not enter a partnership like this lightly. Each of these schools conducted its own due diligence before agreeing to commit incoming students to a structured, six-year medical pathway. Their willingness to do so is significant: it shows WAUSM is viewed as a respected partner within US higher education, and that the academic standards your child will be held to are the same standards these established universities were comfortable putting their name behind.

If Your Child’s Plans Change

The APMD is not all-or-nothing. If your child completes the undergraduate phase and decides medicine isn’t the right path after all, they still walk away with a full US bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, the same degree earned by any other graduate of that school.

An Investment In Their Future

The APMD uses a progressive pricing model that evolves with your child through each stage of the pathway: undergraduate-comparable pricing in the early years, a transition year as medical coursework begins, and standard medical school tuition once they’re fully in the MD Program. Full details are covered on the APMD Tuition page.

Support for Families Outside the United States

If your family is based outside the US, WAUSM works with Siskind Susser, a US immigration law firm, to support your child through every visa stage of the pathway, the F-1 student visa during undergraduate years, the Bahamian permit to reside during the medical sciences phase, and the visas required for clinical training and eventual residency. WAUSM can’t guarantee visa outcomes, but we can guarantee your child won’t be navigating that process alone.

Questions Parents Often Ask

Is WAUSM accredited?
Yes – WAUSM holds provisional accreditation from the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) while its full accreditation review is underway. CAAM-HP completed its accreditation site visit in April 2026, covering both WAUSM’s Freeport campus and its Chicago clinical training site, with a decision expected shortly. Full accreditation can’t be granted until a school graduates its first class, so this is the standard next step for any new medical school, and WAUSM is right on that timeline. Students are ECFMG-eligible to sit for the USMLE and enter the US residency match.
What happens if my child doesn’t want to continue after the bachelor’s degree?
They keep the degree they earned. See “If Your Child’s Plans Change” above.
How is my child supported if they’re studying far from home?
Through dedicated APMD advising at the partner university, WAUSM’s open-door faculty culture, and, for international families, dedicated immigration support.
When does career and residency planning start?
Day one of the MD Program, not in the final year.
