Student Life

To become extraordinary physicians, medical students need to expand their horizons, build their character, and hone their focus. As a Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM) student, you will be encouraged to take time outside of classes and clinics to do just that.

As a Caribbean medical school, WAUSM provides students with the tools they need to succeed in a diverse and inspiring environment. Numerous cultures converge in Freeport, creating a unique dynamic where students can make a difference while making their mark. Freeport also attracts a wide range of cultural events promoting local and visiting artists, musicians, and writers.

Several times a year, the WAUSM community comes together to celebrate our students’ achievements and milestones, beginning with the White Coat Ceremony, where you will be formally welcomed to the medical community.

And as a member of our initial classes, you will enjoy limitless leadership, academic, and community opportunities – from helping to shape curricula, to becoming the founding member of a student club or organization, to establishing health-focused initiatives within the community – allowing you to build a portfolio that will enable you to stand out when attaining a residency, and beyond!

Our preclerkship campus location plays a prominent role in the WAUSM student experience. A vibrant and culturally diverse city, Freeport offers students real-world opportunities to make an impact from the onset of their medical school careers.

Student Experience

The “student experience” in medical school is of paramount importance, both to your success as a student, and beyond as a practitioner. Succeeding in medical school, planning for your future as a MD, and transitioning into residency all present new challenges, and with them, new opportunities.

At Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM), you can expect a student experience that will empower you to choose opportunities that allow you to progress toward long-term goals, such as identifying career pathways, attaining confidence on your own competencies, exploring diverse practice settings, and pursuing personal interests.

With a focus on “the whole student,” the WAUSM student experience is built upon:

  • Career and Professional Development
  • WAUSM Learning Communities
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Academic Support
  • Health and Wellness
  • Community Engagement

Diversity is at the heart of WAUSM. We believe that a diverse, inclusive, and equitable school community is a fundamental part of preparing medical students to become MDs of the future. As a Caribbean medical school, WAUSM students have the unique advantage of experiencing, and achieving, a broadened outlook through both academic and non-academic initiatives.

Confidence is key to becoming a successful physician. By broadening your outlook, providing essential academic and personal support, and giving you diverse opportunities to hone your skillset, the WAUSM student experience will allow you to grow into a physician who is capable of taking care not only of your future patients’ health and wellbeing, but your own as well.
