Scholarship & Information for Canadians

AN MD PROGRAM DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU

students

As a Canadian, you have many options when it comes to choosing a medical school outside of Canada. We think WAUSM should factor into your considerations for several compelling reasons that apply to you specifically. But first, we want you to know that we recognize the time and effort you have put into your undergraduate studies and extracurricular activities and our Admissions Committee, which includes several Canadian faculty, take your entire portfolio into account when reviewing your application.

CANADIAN SCHOLARSHIP

In addition to the SELECT Scholarship that covers full first-semester tuition, WAUSM offers a scholarship specifically for Canadian students that applies to both the preclerkship and clerkship semesters.

Moreover, we will work with you individually to find appropriate funding resources for the rest of your medical school education, including bank lines of credit with banks such as the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) that lend amounts up to the full cost of attendance.

“I was originally interested in WAUSM for the location and small class sizes, but I knew from the first moment I spoke with WAUSM admissions that I would not just be a number at WAUSM! Feeling heard and supported throughout my journey and transition to the island was a gift, and now that I've been here for almost a year, I truly believe WAUSM will soon be the go-to place for Canadians!

Why WAUSM for your MD as a Canadian Student

Internationally trained physicians, including Canadians who have studied medicine abroad, make up a significant portion of the physician workforce in Canada. WAUSM is recognized in the World Directory of Medical Schools and our students are eligible to participate in both the Canadian and US residency matches. For students who choose to complete their residency training in the US, there are provincial licensure pathways in place for Canadians who have studied medicine abroad to return to Canada to practice. The medical education you will receive here will be unlike any other as a result of our:

Faculty

WAUSM faculty have substantial experience in the medical field and education with decades of teaching and curriculum development experience. As a result, you will benefit from a unique international experience learning from faculty from across the globe with outstanding achievements to their credit. You will benefit from studying under US- and Canadian-trained faculty who can provide detailed and precise guidance as far as your future career goals are concerned. They have been in your shoes, and have the experience, knowledge, and connections to help open doors. Whether you are interested in training in a specific clinical field or becoming a physician scientist, our faculty will help you with your residency choices and how to successfully navigate the complex residency arena.

Faculty-to-Student Ratio

When you come to WAUSM, one of your primary advantages will be the faculty-to-student ratio. You will hardly find any medical school where you will find such an advantageous one. This will give you an edge in the Preclerkship Curriculum because you will be able to walk into any one of your professor's offices and have them to yourself whenever the need arises.

Flipped Classroom Approach

Like many Canadian and US medical schools, WAUSM uses a flipped classroom approach and is the only Caribbean medical school to do so. What this means is you will not encounter a traditional lecture-style approach to learning but will instead be immersed in an active classroom experience that allows you to practice and learn skills of logical reasoning and problem solving and prepare for NBME-style questions that are the basis for the USMLE. From the very start of your medical studies, you will be preparing for the challenges ahead in a way that no other medical school in the region is doing.

Exam Prep

Unique among Caribbean medical schools, WAUSM's entire fifth semester is dedicated to exam prep, so whether you are looking to return to Canada for residency and practice or are considering beginning your career as a physician in the US, the WAUSM MD Program will arguably better prepare you for your medical exams. In the US, students write several Step exams. In Canada, you write the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) at the end of your fourth year and the National Assessment Collaboration Objective Structured Clinical Examination (NAC OSCE). By preparing for and taking the Step exams in the same way a US student would, you will be that much better prepared for the cumulative exams you will write no matter where your career ultimately takes you. Students who are trained at WAUSM or other schools outside of Canada are less stressed when it comes to the major exams at the end of their fourth year because they had practice along the way (ie, Step 1 and 2), giving them the preparation needed to become complete physicians.
