Western Atlantic University School of Medicine Awarded Provisional Accreditation by CAAM-HP

Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM) is pleased to announce that the University has been awarded provisional accreditation from the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP).

WAUSM underwent rigorous, onsite reviews of both its pre-clerkship campus in Freeport, Grand Bahama, and partner hospital, Chicago-based Saint Anthony Hospital, where students complete the clerkship portion of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program. During these visits, a team of reviewers evaluated the University’s compliance with the high standards set forth by CAAM-HP.

“CAAM-HP is the gold standard in medical school accreditation in the region and we are grateful to the faculty, staff, and students who helped us achieve it,” said Joseph Flaherty, MD, President and Chief Medical Officer. “Because of their dedication to excellence and commitment to training the MDs of the future, WAUSM is well positioned to continue to do our part in helping to address the looming physician shortage that has been predicted in the US and Canada.”

WAUSM was conceived in early 2018 by a group of medical school leaders with a proven record of success and officially opened the doors of its pre-clerkship campus in Freeport, Grand Bahama, and welcomed its charter class in January of 2022.

Students spend five, 15-week semesters in Freeport (20 consecutive months) before moving to the United States for clinical clerkships, selectives, and electives (additional 20 months).

“This achievement is something we all share – we built this school together!  I am so proud of every member of our WAUSM community and look forward to our continued growth and success. We look forward to achieving full accreditation once our charter class graduates, in keeping with the third and final step of the CAAM-HP accreditation process,” said Paula Wales, EdD, Executive Dean and Chief Academic Officer.
