Understanding Residency Specialties, And a Look at What WAUSM Students May Pursue

March 9, 2026

As Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM) approaches its first-ever residency Match, excitement continues to build, not only on campus but across a medical education community eager to see our new physicians take their place in hospitals and clinics in the US and Canada.

In this final installment of our Countdown to WAUSM’s First Residency Match series, we explore the landscape of US residency specialties and examine what our inaugural cohort may pursue based on national trends, student interests, and the evolving needs of the healthcare system.

What Are Residency Specialties? A Quick Overview

Every medical graduate entering US or Canadian residency training must choose a specialty, ranging from broad fields like Internal Medicine and Family Medicine to highly specialized paths like Dermatology, Orthopedic Surgery, or Interventional Radiology.

Residency program offerings and competitiveness shift each year, and medical students rely on credible data to inform their decisions. According to the AAMC’s Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), the number of applicants and applications submitted across specialties continues to grow annually, and the 2026 ERAS season provides detailed dashboards showing applicant volumes and specialty-specific trends.

Specialty choices are influenced by a mix of factors:

  • Clinical interests
  • Lifestyle considerations
  • Competitiveness
  • Geographic preferences
  • Program culture and training style
  • Long-term career goals

The American Medical Association (AMA) notes that choosing a medical specialty can feel overwhelming, so they provide detailed specialty profiles, workforce maps, and FREIDA to provide a comprehensive database of residency programs and specialty insights.

Which Specialties Are Most Popular?

Each year, certain specialties attract particularly high student interest. A few notable trends from recent national data include:

  1. Internal Medicine

Historically the largest residency specialty in the US, Internal Medicine continues to attract a high volume of applicants and offers broad career pathways. According to the ACGME’s 2024–2025 Graduate Medical Education statistics, Internal Medicine represents a major portion of the 137,432 residents in specialty programs, reflecting stable demand and availability.

  1. Family Medicine

Family Medicine remains essential for primary care workforce needs. While often considered more accessible, recent analyses show it has become increasingly competitive, with some applicant categories demonstrating match rates under 95%.

  1. Pediatrics

A favorite for students passionate about child health, Pediatrics continues to maintain strong residency numbers according to NRMP match reports.

  1. Surgery and Surgical Subspecialties

Surgical disciplines, including General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, and others, remain highly competitive. ACGME data indicates that in 2024–2025, surgical residency programs were among the subspecialties seeing high applicant activity and significant training capacity.

  1. Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine has experienced fluctuations in applicant interest in recent years but continues to be a high-impact specialty that draws students seeking acute care training. NRMP data shows variable match outcomes depending on year and applicant type.

  1. Highly Competitive Specialties

Fields such as Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, and Radiation Oncology continue to have some of the lowest match rates and highest applicant-to-position ratios, according to analyses of specialty competitiveness.

Competitiveness and Match Rates Across Specialties

Understanding competitiveness is essential for making strategic, realistic residency plans, stressing the importance of strong preparation, but also the persistence and adaptability needed during the Match process.

The NRMP’s annual Match Results and Data report expands on specialty-specific match outcomes and has recently added enhanced “placement rate” metrics that include SOAP outcomes for a full-spectrum view of residency placement.

What Specialties Might WAUSM Students Pursue?

As WAUSM’s inaugural class prepares for residency, students are exploring a wide range of specialties including Primary Care, Surgery, OB-GYN, Emergency Medicine, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

“Because of our size, we know every student going through the Match and what they’re interested in,” said Dr. Paula Wales, WAUSM’s Provost and Chief Operating Officer.

Overall, WAUSM students, like medical students nationwide, are pursuing a diverse mix of specialties that reflect their individual strengths, passions, and long‑term career goals.

Opportunities for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

As a medical school with students planning to participate in the US Match as IMGs, WAUSM uniquely prepares its graduates to excel. Recent NRMP data highlights the pathways and match statistics for IMGs, helping future WAUSM graduates navigate the landscape with confidence.

How WAUSM Prepares Students for Success Across All Specialties

WAUSM’s curriculum, coaching model, and clinical experiences are intentionally structured to prepare students to pursue any specialty by offering:

  • Robust USMLE preparation integrated into the curriculum
  • Personalized career advising beginning early in the MD program
  • Clinical rotations in the US at hospital partners
  • Professional development and leadership training
  • Mentorship from experienced physicians across diverse specialties

As our inaugural class enters the Match, they do so equipped with the tools, training, and resilience needed to excel, no matter which specialty they choose.

When asked what makes WAUSM’s student preparation so successful, Dr. Wales said, “I’d say there isn’t one thing; it’s many things working together and working very well. First and foremost, we have fantastic students. Our students are bright and energetic – they want to do medicine and they want to learn. Also, our faculty are tremendous – they are world-renowned in their specialties and they worked very hard to develop a unique curriculum that helps our students learn in a very active way. So, the curriculum combined with the students combined with faculty and combined with the support that we wrap around every single student really makes a difference for us.”

She added, “There’s also some special sauce in there which is that we’re a new school and we know that every single student matters, every single student builds our reputation so because of that we are a high-touch school. We know our students. We work together as a team to have this collective success, and we’re very excited about this upcoming Match.”

Looking Ahead

WAUSM’s first residency Match is more than a milestone – it’s a testament to the vision that inspired this university: creating a path for compassionate, skilled, and highly capable future physicians.

As we prepare to celebrate the achievements of our inaugural cohort, we do so knowing that their journey will inspire the WAUSM students who follow, expanding the impact of our community across every corner of medicine.
